Brian and Paula Powers Launch $1M Inspiration Challenge for UC San Diego Scholarships

Brian and Paula Powers donate $1 million to UC San Diego to match scholarships for first-gen, low-income students through the Inspiration Challenge.

Big news for UC San Diego students! Philanthropists Brian and Paula Powers have launched a $1 million matching fund challenge to support scholarships for students who need it the most.

What Is the Inspiration Challenge?

The Brian and Paula Powers Chancellor’s Associates Inspiration Challenge is a new effort to help fund scholarships at UC San Diego. Their $1 million gift will match donations dollar-for-dollar to the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program (CASP).

Who Will Benefit?

The scholarship supports high-achieving, low-income students—especially first-generation college students who often face extra challenges in college life. CASP covers tuition, housing, and books to help students graduate without heavy debt.

Why This Matters

Paula Powers understands the need first-hand. As a first-generation college graduate herself, she knows the power of having financial help and personal support at school. Together with her husband Brian, they have already helped over 30 students through previous donations.

University Leaders React

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla called their gift “transformative” and said it will inspire even more donors to invest in the next generation of leaders. Since CASP began in 2013, over 2,900 students have benefited from this program.
