The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally referred petitions against its Deputy Communications Director, Ernest Owusu-Bempah, to the party’s National Council for consideration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 24, 2025, and signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party confirmed that it had received petitions from members demanding Mr Owusu-Bempah’s removal from office.
The statement stressed that his appointment was made on the recommendation of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and subsequently approved by the National Council, which will now determine the matter.
“The leadership of the Party has observed, with grave concern, the conduct of Mr Ernest Owusu-Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications,” the statement read. “In line with due process, and considering that his appointment was made upon the recommendation of the NEC and subsequently approved by the National Council, the matter has been formally referred to the National Council for appropriate consideration and determination.”
The statement reaffirmed the NPP’s “unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency.”
Reacting to the development in an interview on Okay FM, Mr Owusu-Bempah insisted he was being unfairly targeted because of his open support for presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. He argued that his public comments, especially on illegal mining, had been taken out of context.
“All the statements I have made have been about leadership. I said Kennedy Agyapong will deal with galamsey even if it involves his mother or sister. I did not insult anyone,” he said.
He accused his critics of bias, claiming that his stance had drawn scrutiny only because he had declared support for Mr Agyapong. “Why am I the only one being attacked? The only reason is that I am the only national officer who has declared support for Kennedy Agyapong. If someone from Dr Bawumia’s camp did the same, it would be treated lightly,” he added.
Mr Owusu-Bempah reaffirmed his loyalty to Kennedy Agyapong and vowed to defend himself before the National Council. He further stated that the party had no “moral right” to criticise the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over illegal mining, arguing that the NPP had not performed better in that area when in government.
