Charles Bissue, Director of Operations for the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, has expressed his satisfaction that the corruption allegations against him are now before the court. He believes this is the most appropriate course of action, particularly after facing what he describes as unfair attacks and accusations.
Mr. Bissue stated he is glad the matter is now in court, especially after facing criticism from members of his own political party. He is optimistic that he will be exonerated, as he maintains he has not engaged in any misconduct.
In April, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) filed criminal charges against Mr. Bissue, a former presidential staffer and Secretary to the disbanded Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM). He faces multiple counts of corruption and using his public office for personal gain.
The OSP alleges that Mr. Bissue accepted a bribe of GH¢35,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong. This payment was allegedly for the fast-tracked renewal of an expired mining license for a company named ORR Resources Limited, circumventing standard IMCIM procedures.
Addressing concerns raised by some individuals regarding his freedom, Mr. Bissue said, “I have no problem with the calls for my arrest. Mustapha Gbande, a presidential staffer, has expressed worry over why I am walking around and not arrested. That is an opinion he has expressed.”
He continued, “He has the right to say what he said, but he may have said so based on an assumption without facts. As a Ghanaian citizen, he had the right to comment. But the truth of the matter is that we have state institutions responsible for dealing with issues like this.”
Mr. Bissue revealed he has been under investigation for nearly eight years by multiple agencies, including the Criminal Investigations Department, the Bureau of National Investigations, and the OSP. He noted that the police previously exonerated him.
“I have also decided to avail myself for any probe by anybody,” he said. “I am even happy I am being prosecuted under the NDC [National Democratic Congress] because I did not want the matter to be decided under the NPP [New Patriotic Party] so that people will say he influenced the outcome. I am hopeful that after the case is over and I am exonerated, people will recognise and accept such an outcome.”
