“We won’t allow mining in Bompata” — Residents warn

Residents of Bompata in the Asante Akim District of the Ashanti Region have declared their firm opposition to any form of mining activity in their community.

The residents reiterated their commitment to safeguarding their environment for future generations and urged other communities to take similar stands against environmentally destructive mining practices.

At a press conference on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the residents stated that no company or individual would be allowed to prospect for or mine gold in the area.

According to them, the decision stems from concerns over the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, in other parts of the country.

Spokesperson for the residents, Joseph Baah, said the community is determined to protect its environment and livelihoods from destruction.

“Our position is based on the serious environmental, social, and health consequences that mining has caused in other parts of the country. We will not allow mining in our community,” he declared.

“Our specific concern includes, but is not limited to, the destruction of farm lands, vegetation, and forest resources, which threatens our livelihood.”

He called on the government and relevant authorities to respect the community’s decision and ensure that no mining permits are granted for operations in the area.
