The Acting Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Randy Abbey, has launched a lawsuit against Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC, who serves as the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the Bono Region, for purportedly making slanderous statements.
As reported by citinewsroom.com, the legal action was initiated on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Dr. Abbey is seeking GH¢20 million in compensation for what he claims are malicious and untrue statements made by Abronye during a public announcement.
Court filings indicate that Abronye has accused Dr. Abbey of improper use of government assets and engaging in corrupt activities within COCOBOD. Specifically, Abronye claimed that Dr. Abbey used multiple state-funded Land Cruisers to transport a personal chair from Accra to cocoa farms instead of utilizing chairs provided by the farmers.
Moreover, Abronye alleged that Dr. Abbey manipulated internal job appointments to enable the theft of public funds.
These declarations, which were disseminated publicly and widely shared on social media, are believed to have significantly harmed Dr. Abbey’s reputation, subjecting him to public scorn and disdain.
In the legal filing made through COCOBOD‘s Legal Department, Dr. Abbey is asking the court to declare Abronye’s statements as defamatory. He is also requesting a complete retraction along with an unequivocal apology to be published on all platforms where the accusations were made, in addition to the removal of all slanderous material from online sources.
The lawsuit additionally seeks general, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GH¢20 million, a permanent injunction preventing Abronye from making any further defamatory statements, coverage of legal fees, and any other relief the court may find appropriate.
Dr. Abbey’s legal representatives have asserted that the claims are entirely unfounded and intended to tarnish his professional standing, which has been established over years of committed service. They highlighted the necessity of honest and responsible public dialogue, particularly concerning individuals in roles of public accountability.
At this time, Abronye DC has not given a public statement in response to the lawsuit.
This legal filing comes on the heels of a similar defamation case submitted in July 2025 by Hugh Clement A. Brown, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, who also pursued Abronye for GH¢20 million due to alleged defamatory comments.
