I’m not ungrateful – Napo restates his backing for Bawumia
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has its Vice-Presidential Candidate for 2024, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who has expressed strong backing for the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party readies itself for the upcoming 2026 presidential race.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Prempeh, better known as Napo, responded to allegations that he might be changing his political loyalty.
He affirmed his steadfast support for Dr. Bawumia, whom he considers the most suitable candidate to guide the NPP through the next election.
“I am still 100% behind Bawumia. Being ungrateful is not beneficial,” he remarked, highlighting that his choice as Bawumia’s running mate in 2024 was a testament to trust and a rejection of internal party pressures.
Dr. Prempeh mentioned that some prominent individuals opposed his nomination, yet Dr. Bawumia “overcame all challenges” in selecting him.
“There were notable figures who approached Bawumia, advising him against choosing me, but he chose me anyway. I will not be viewed as ungrateful,” he asserted.
He also elaborated on his connections with other prominent members of the party, particularly Kennedy Agyapong, whom he referred to as a “friend and big brother.” Nevertheless, he affirmed that his loyalty is directed towards Dr. Bawumia.
“If, after he [Bawumia] wins again, he should consider who he wishes to appoint as his running mate, that is ultimately his decision,” Napo stated, emphasizing that this choice should always rest with Bawumia.
Drawing from an Akan saying, Dr. Prempeh compared Dr. Bawumia to a peacock, suggesting that his exceptional traits draw attention and inevitably lead to criticism.
“Why do you think he faces various attacks and propaganda? It’s because he stands out,” he further commented.
The former Minister of Education reiterated his conviction that Dr. Bawumia is the party’s best bet for triumph in 2028, pointing to his vision, perseverance, and wide-ranging appeal.
