Akwatia by-election: ‘Aggression leads to more aggression’ – Gbande cautions

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has warned that any acts of aggression during the forthcoming Akwatia by-election will provoke a strong response, emphasizing that the party will not permit threats to hinder the electoral process.

While speaking to party supporters on the campaign trail in Akwatia on Wednesday, August 27, Gbande reiterated the NDC’s dedication to maintaining peace but cautioned that the party would not remain silent if provoked on election day.

“We are not bringing violence to this place. The NDC does not endorse violence, but on September 2, if anyone attempts to introduce violence to our town or polling areas, they may arrive, but they won’t have a way to leave. Violence leads to more violence,” he remarked.

He encouraged party members to concentrate on rallying support for the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, highlighting that success would hinge on discipline, industriousness, and vigilance at the polling stations.

“We must turnout in large numbers to work diligently. We should motivate the public to cast their votes for our candidate. Success in this election is impossible without our active participation. Let’s remain motivated,” Mr. Gbande urged.

In related news, the national leadership of the NDC has expressed confidence that the by-election will proceed without incident. National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, speaking in a separate venue, stated that the party is committed to promoting a fair competition and anticipates a peaceful electoral process.

The Akwatia by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, will feature a contest between the NPP’s constituency treasurer, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, and the NDC’s constituency secretary, Bernard Bediako, garnering national interest due to its status as a swing seat.

In preparation for any possible disturbances, the Ghana Police Service has reported the deployment of over 600 officers to ensure safety and order before, during, and after the elections. These officers, some of whom have recently completed an intensive five-day training course, will be responsible for protecting the integrity of the electoral system.
