Ayawaso East By-election: NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif concedes defeat

Baba Ali Yussif, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, has conceded defeat.

Speaking to the media at the constituency’s collation centre, Ali Yussif indicated that the collation of the by-election results by his team showed that he had lost.

He said that he lost the election because the people of Ayawaso East did not believe in his message this time around.

“The message didn’t bring the votes… There is an MP elected, we congratulate him, and we’ll move on,” he added.

Ali Yussif indicated that he is not disappointed with the outcome of the election, saying, “Why should I be disappointed? An election is like a game of football. You win today, you lose tomorrow. So it’s normal. And if you can’t stand the heat in politics or losing an election, then it’s better you don’t venture into it. The Arsenal fans can tell you this better.”

Although the Electoral Commission of Ghana is yet to declare the official results of the by-election, provisional results sighted by GhanaWeb show that the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has won the election.

According to the results, Baba Jamal garnered about 10,803 votes, representing 63.33% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,000 votes, representing 23.45% of the total votes cast.

The three other candidates in the election together polled 2,254 votes (13.26%), while rejected ballots were 122.
