Baba Jamal wins Ayawaso East by-election – Provisional results

Unconfirmed results of the just-ended Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, sighted by GhanaWeb, show that the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has won the election.

According to the results, Baba Jamal garnered about 10,803 votes, representing 63.33% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,000 votes, representing 23.45% of the total votes cast.

The three other candidates in the election together polled 2,254 votes (13.26%), while rejected ballots were 122.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is yet to declare the official results of the by-election.

The Ayawaso East by-election was necessitated by the demise of the NDC Member of Parliament (MP), Naser Toure Mahama.

Five men — NDC’s Baba Jamal, NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif, Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal People’s Party (LPP), as well as independent candidates Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kannor — contested in the March 3, 2026, by-election.

The Ayawaso East Constituency has been in existence since the creation of the Fourth Republic, which implies that the constituency has had nine parliamentary elections.

Data shows that the NDC has won all nine parliamentary elections in the constituency, with the NPP coming second in all these elections, making this the 10th victory for the NDC, should it be confirmed.
