Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong, has indicated that the backing of more than 60 New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s expected presidential campaign in 2028 is rooted in his demonstrated leadership abilities and capacity to change Ghana rather than based on personal connections.
“Backing a candidate isn’t influenced by personal relationships or professional associations; it’s about possessing the essential qualities for Ghana,” the MP remarked during an interview on the Ekosii Sen program on Asempa FM.
His remarks were made following a private meeting on Thursday, June 19, 2025, involving Dr. Bawumia and the cohort of NPP lawmakers who expressed their support for him.
This support arrives just before the party’s presidential primaries set for January 31, 2026.
Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong clarified that the MPs chose to endorse Dr. Bawumia voluntarily, driven by their own convictions rather than any pressure.
“At this stage of our party’s path, we see Bawumia as the most suitable candidate to lead the NPP and the nation. He possesses the abilities necessary to revitalize the party and improve the country’s situation,” he asserted.
He further noted that all MPs who attended the gathering showed a strong conviction in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and his vision for the country.
