Eight suspected illegal miners nabbed at Pakyi Kaniago
Eight persons suspected of engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) activities at Pakyi Kaniago have been arrested by police from the Asokwa Division in the Atwima District.
According to a report by 3news.com on September 3, 2025, the arrests were made during a two-hour operation on Sunday, August 31, along the River Nwere, River Abufunu, and River Akai, where the suspects were caught actively mining using chanfang machines.
Apart from the eight persons arrested in the operation, several others managed to escape as the police moved in.
Items retrieved from the site included eight motorbikes, multiple pumping machines, and one excavator.
Police officials explained that the equipment at the site, being used to facilitate illegal mining operations, has caused major environmental damage.
Local residents told reporters that over 10 acres of cocoa farms have been destroyed due to the menace.
Additionally, the three rivers in the area have been heavily polluted, sparking concerns about long-term effects on water quality and agricultural productivity.
“This destruction is disheartening. Our farms are gone, and the rivers are no longer safe for use,” a resident lamented.
The Asokwa Divisional Police Commander, DCOP Rev Nyamekye Adani Ameyaw, has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities at Pakyi Kaniago.
He disclosed that a docket has been forwarded to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, and charge sheets have been prepared.
Meanwhile, the suspects are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
While some residents declined to speak publicly due to fears of retaliation from illegal miners, others openly criticised the traditional leadership, particularly the Chief of Pakyi No. 1, Nana Poku Owusu Ababio II for allegedly failing to take decisive action against the ongoing environmental destruction.
In a plea for intervention, residents have called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to help protect their farmlands and water bodies from further degradation.
The suspects remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
