Fifi Kwetey: MPs cannot pretend to be holy on vote-buying

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has said Members of Parliament should be the last to lecture others on vote-buying.

Following the controversial internal polls, the majority caucus demanded that the Ayawaso East NDC primary be annulled over allegations of voter inducement during the exercise.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of an engagement with the party’s Volta caucus ahead of the  March 3 by-election, Mr Kwetey argued that MPs who have themselves navigated fiercely contested primaries are in no position to moralise on the issue.

“Our friends in Parliament cannot pretend to be holy. Every single one of them have been involved in their primaries. So the last group to pontificate about vote-buying should not be them at all. So let’s ensure that if there is a comprehensive solution, we find it together.”

He stressed that the Majority Caucus remains aligned with the party’s official position to proceed with the by-election and maintain Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as the NDC’s candidate.

“I believe that they are on board, because the party has taken a position,” he said.

The Ayawaso East by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Nasser Toure Mahama, in January.

The NDC’s candidate, Baba Jamal, is seeking to retain the seat for the party, but faces a strong challenge from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, in what is shaping up to be a closely watched contest.
