Fuseini Issah: Rising insecurity forcing Ghanaians into refugee status

Former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Alhaji Fuseini Issah, has expressed deep concern over rising insecurity in Ghana following the displacement of over 14,000 people to Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso as refugees due to the Gbinyiri land dispute.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Alhaji Issah described the situation as alarming and urged the government to safeguard the peace and stability inherited from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The extent of insecurity we are experiencing here. I can’t remember the last time Ghanaians became refugees in another country…Today, from the reportage that we are getting, Ghanaians have begun running to our neighbouring countries as refugees. This is what we are experiencing under the so-called reset agenda.

“They are at the helm, we are begging them, they met a one Ghana, a Ghana which was intact under the New Patriotic Party, peace was very important to us, security was important to us.”

The Gbinyiri conflict, which began on Sunday, August 24, has spread to about 12 communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.

The violence has forced thousands to flee across Ghana’s northern borders to seek refuge, while others are being housed in temporary shelters at Sawla under the care of NADMO and the Ghana Red Cross.

The clashes reportedly erupted over a disputed parcel of land.
