Galamsey will end shortly – Paa Kwesi Schandorf

Former JoyNews presenter and current executive at Goldbod, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has confirmed to Ghanaians that the government is putting more effort into eradicating illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. This initiative adopts a balanced method focusing on sustainability, regulation, and diplomatic efforts.

In an interview with Woezor TV, observed by MyNewsGh, Schandorf communicated the dedication of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to urgently addressing the issue of illegal mining.

“For Ghanaians who are concerned about the future of galamsey, I want to assure you that the Minister is working tirelessly day and night,” Schandorf stated.

“I believe that, with God’s grace, we will soon discuss illegal mining as something that belongs to the past.”

He was quick to emphasize, though, that mining itself is not the core issue. “There’s nothing wrong with mining.

The real problem arises from the incorrect methods used by many individuals. Consequently, the environment suffers,” he pointed out.

Schandorf mentioned that Goldbod, previously the Ghana Gold Board, under the leadership of the Lands Minister, is focused on implementing sustainable mining programs that will provide legal and responsible opportunities for miners.

“Our aim is to introduce sustainable mining initiatives that will allow people interested in mining to continue their work… but with the necessary regulations and protocols to protect the environment,” he stated.

In response to public demands for stronger measures against illegal miners, including extreme tactics like “shoot-to-kill,” Schandorf made it clear that the Minister does not favor these approaches.

“There have been proposals suggesting that we should adopt a very aggressive and deadly strategy against illegal miners, like shooting to kill them.

“However, the Minister does not support this idea, as our goal is to protect the environment, not to cause harm,” he asserted.

Instead, the approach will be strong yet compassionate. “While we aim to take decisive and assertive actions, we also incorporate a degree of strategy and diplomacy, ensuring that we do not worsen an already problematic situation,” he concluded.
