Government Nominee Fafa Peace Bankas Sworn In as Member of Akatsi College of Education Governing Council

On Friday, August 22, 2025, a significant milestone was marked in the history of the Akatsi College of Education (AKATSICO) when a new 13-member Governing Council was officially sworn in. The ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, symbolizes renewed commitment to effective governance and academic excellence at one of Ghana’s foremost teacher training institutions.

The council will be chaired by Dr. Kpeglo-Freiku, whose appointment reflects the Ministry’s determination to strengthen institutional leadership. Other government nominees sworn in include Mrs. Fafa Peace Bankas, Mr. Tornyeava Sylvester Edah, and Ms. Akua Dzimega.

This inauguration forms part of a nationwide initiative by the Education Ministry, which simultaneously established governing councils for seven other Colleges of Education to ensure strong oversight, accountability, and alignment with national educational goals.

Among the appointees, the inclusion of Mrs. Fafa Peace Bankas has drawn wide commendation. Known as a visionary entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community advocate, she brings a wealth of experience in grassroots leadership, youth empowerment, and social innovation to the Governing Council.

Mrs. Bankas is the founder of the Lotus International Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in the Volta Region that focuses on education, health, and empowerment.

Through this foundation, she has spearheaded several impactful initiatives, including; “Pink October”(A breast and cervical cancer awareness and screening campaign), “PadUptheGirl”(Menstrual hygiene and sexual health education for adolescent girls), “Kids Jamboree”(An annual celebration providing entertainment, mentorship, and gifts to over 300 children) and “Peki Icon Talent Show”(A signature platform that discovers and showcases emerging creative talents, nurturing the creativity and self-confidence of young people, particularly in the Volta Region).

Proudly Born, Breath and Made in Ghana, Mrs. Bankas draws strength from her cultural heritage in Peki, which shapes her values and fuels her passion for sustainable development. Her work reflects the belief that real change begins within the community and radiates outward through innovation, mentorship, and compassion.

Founded on October 1, 1963, Akatsi College of Education, located in the Akatsi South District of the Volta Region, has for decades trained highly skilled educators for Ghana’s basic schools. With its motto, “Quality teacher education in a changing society,” the college continues to equip teachers with the tools needed to meet the demands of a dynamic educational environment.

The swearing-in of the Governing Council is expected to strengthen institutional governance, improve academic planning, and elevate standards of teacher training.
