Govt to announce decision in MultiChoice Ghana dispute today

The government is set to make a formal announcement today, Thursday, September 4, 2025, in its escalating standoff with MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv.

The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation has warned the company that its operations could be shut down by September 6 unless subscription fees are reduced.

Already, MultiChoice is facing heavy penalties after failing to provide key pricing data demanded by regulators. The sanctions at GHC10,000 per day have now accumulated to more than GHC150,000.

Communications Minister Samuel George says the government remains firm on its position but is also leaving room for dialogue.

“Last night, a team from MultiChoice reached out and made some proposals,” the Minister revealed. “We’ve asked for further concessions to be made. I’ve given them up to close of business today.”

According to him, “the Ministry will make an official declaration today, but there are strong indications that an amicable resolution could be reached before the deadline.”

The dispute has drawn attention from both consumers and industry watchers, many of whom have long complained about the cost of pay-TV services in Ghana.

If talks collapse, the government could take the unprecedented step of suspending MultiChoice’s operations—an outcome that would disrupt millions of households nationwide.
