Helicopter crash: Mahama donates GH¢100,000 to Sikaman-Brofeyedu residents for recovery efforts

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound gratitude to 13 residents of Sikaman-Brofoyedu for their heroic role in retrieving the bodies of eight victims from the military helicopter crash of August 6, 2025.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, visited the community on Wednesday, August 27, on behalf of the President, to commend the rescuers and present a support package from government.

The helicopter went down in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve in the Adansi Akrofrom District, claiming the lives of eight senior officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The victims were on official duty when the tragedy occurred.

Conveying the President’s message, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said:
“The President has asked me to come and thank the residents who helped recover the bodies of our eight men. We have a plaque for all of you in honour of what you did.”

As part of the recognition, President Mahama donated GH¢100,000 to the rescuers and GH¢20,000 to the Adansi Traditional Council for related rites.

He further announced that the 13 individuals would be offered employment opportunities suited to their skills and qualifications.

Beyond the immediate package, the President pledged improvements in local infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of roads in the area.

The gesture is being widely viewed as a significant acknowledgement of the bravery and selflessness displayed by the Sikaman-Brofoyedu community during one of Ghana’s darkest national moments.
