I never shouted during my time as Minority Leader – Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has provided insights regarding his time as the Minority Leader, asserting that his behavior was significantly different from that of the present Minority Leader.

He claimed that his way of leading was commendable and did not align with the current caucus leader’s methods.

Bagbin dismissed any allegations suggesting he acted in a similar manner before, emphasizing that he never elevated his voice in Parliament to communicate his points.

“What the current Minority Leader is doing is distinct from my actions. He has mentioned several times that he drew from my experiences. Please review my past record. I never raised my voice or sought to appear impressive in the House. Absolutely not! ” he remarked in a video released by TV3 on November 17, 2025.

The former Minority Leader under the government of JA Kufuor [Alban Bagbin] stated that he took the time to understand the political climate and the worries of the people, noting that this influenced his leadership style.

However, Speaker Bagbin confessed that he lost his calm only once — when then Speaker Peter Ala Adjetey personally attacked him.

“I examined the political landscape, gauged the feelings of the public, and acted accordingly. I didn’t behave as you are currently. Anyone can check the record. The only time I stood up was in response to a personal attack made by the Rt. Hon. Speaker Peter Adjetey, who did not permit me to share my perspective.

“My good friend Papa Ankoma, who was serving as the Majority Leader at that time, stood up and pointed out that since he had mentioned me directly, the standing orders entitled me to respond. Yet, the Speaker reprimanded him, instructed him to sit down, and obstructed my chance to reply,” he recounted.

Alban Bagbin also mentioned that despite being denied the chance to address the issue, he made a personal protest by exiting the chamber while his peers stayed to carry on with the discussions.

He noted that this event gained widespread attention only after he spoke to the media from his office.

“That day, I gathered my documents and went to my office. My colleagues did not join me; they continued their political activities. It was in my office that a few reporters, led by GTV, approached me to inquire about my departure. I clarified that if this was the Speaker’s approach to directing the House, I would respond similarly. That caught national attention,” he stated.

He finished by stating that this incident is recorded in the official records, and any comparisons of his behavior with that of the current Minority Leader are unfounded.

This is the sole occurrence. Subsequently, after I spoke with him [Adjetey] and clarified that his accusations were unfounded, they requested that I lessen my reaction, which seemed illogical. I mention this as numerous individuals have asserted multiple times that I acted similarly during my time as Minority Leader. Had that been the case, we might have changed the situation in two years, and we nearly achieved victory in the 2004 elections.
