I received treatment for typhoid only a week ago – Oti Regional Minister
The Minister for the Oti Region, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has disclosed that he has recently been diagnosed with typhoid, indicating a rising health issue in the area.
During an appearance on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Gyapong mentioned that he had never experienced typhoid until he took on his role and moved to Dambai. He suffered severe illness last week, necessitating a doctor’s care for three days to provide treatment.
“This is quite alarming. Throughout my life, I have never encountered typhoid. However, after moving to Dambai as the Regional Minister, I was diagnosed just last week,” he expressed with concern.
The Minister pointed out that his personal experience is indicative of a larger health crisis in Oti.
He reported a significant increase in typhoid cases in recent years—from 19,943 occurrences in 2021 to 47,217 in 2024. In the initial half of 2025, the region has already noted 22,216 confirmed cases.
He also reflected on the unfortunate passing of two Municipal Chief Executives in 2022 and 2023 as a result of typhoid. “The day after a recent event, a well-known chief in Dambai died from the illness before he could be taken to the hospital,” he stated.
Mr. Gyapong linked the crisis to environmental issues and inadequate access to fundamental social services. Numerous communities in Oti do not have access to clean drinking water, healthcare facilities, sanitation, and other vital infrastructure, making residents susceptible to avoidable illnesses.
“The truth is that people in this region are lacking safe drinking water and essential services, which is endangering our lives,” he emphasized, calling for immediate action to remedy the situation.
