Internet bullies have turned live performances into a courtroom – Gyakie

Singer Gyakie has shared her recent experiences of performing live, noting that the presence of online critics has diminished the joy of stage engagements, making it feel akin to facing a jury.

In a conversation with the Nigerian newspaper ‘The Guardian’ on August 26, 2025, the Ghanaian artist expressed her passion for both studio recording and live performances, but mentioned that the negativity from social media has introduced a more daunting and stressful atmosphere for performers during their shows.

Collaboration plays a vital role in music creation – Gyakie

She likened the performance space to a “courtroom,” where artists must remain vigilant, fearing that any misstep could be misrepresented and ridiculed online.

“I truly love creating music in the studio, and I also find joy in live shows. The challenge I face on stage, however, is that the online trolling has transformed it into a courtroom setting. One has to be particularly cautious about actions, as a troll might be capturing awkward moments to share online. If I could remove that aspect, performing live would always be enjoyable for me,” she remarked to The Guardian.

I no longer look at comments – Gyakie on handling social media backlash

When queried about a touching fan encounter she recently experienced, Gyakie referenced her performance in Sierra Leone in December 2024.

She reflected on how she was deeply moved by the warm welcome, admitting she was surprised to find the audience was so well-acquainted with her music, singing along flawlessly.

“My concert in Sierra Leone last December was unbelievable. I didn’t anticipate that the crowd would know the majority of my songs by heart. Each day was filled with sincere affection,” she shared.
