NDC’s Azorka granted bail after arrest – Police

The National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Sofo Azorka, has been granted bail and released by the Ghana Police Service following his arrest.

In a police statement dated Friday, September 12, 2025, it was stated that Azorka was arrested in Tamale on September 10, 2025, following the launch of an investigation into an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman during the Akwatia by-election.

“Following the commencement of investigations into an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman at Akwatia on September 2, 2025 during the 2025 Akwatia by-elections, the Eastern South Regional Police Command on September 10, 2025 arrested suspect Alhaji Solo Azorka in Tamale,” portions of the statement read.

The statement added that Azorka was made to give a caution statement and was subsequently released.

He has been directed to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on September 16, 2025, for processing to court.

“Caution statement has been obtained from the suspect and has been released on bail to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on September 16, 2025, at 10am for him to be arraigned before the court,” the statement indicated.

“The Police assures the public of thorough investigations into the matter, hence entreats all to remain calm as further development shall be communicated,” it added.

Background

Alhaji Osman Masawudu, was on the receiving end of a hefty slap during a scuffle at the Akwatia Station during the recently ended by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.

Giving his account of the incident, the NPP Third Vice Chairman, alleged that he was attacked by a National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Sofo Azorka, and his escort while he was granting an interview on live television as part of his election monitoring duties.

“I have been assigned to supervise and monitor the election at Akwatia Zongo. In fact, I was granting an interview when a National Vice Chairman of the NDC, Azorka, out of ignorance, came straight to where I was granting an interview to attack me,” he was quoted saying.
