Revealing the Witnesses: Who supported CJ as the Justice Pwamang Committee concludes its hearing?

The Justice Pwamang Inquiry Committee has concluded gathering evidence concerning Daniel Ofori’s request for the dismissal of the Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Esaaba Araba Sackey Torkornoo, as reported by The Law Platform.

As per the information on The Law Platform’s site, “The Committee has requested written submissions and is still awaiting them regarding Daniel Ofori’s claims and the evidence presented for and against these claims.”

Additionally, the report mentioned several prominent legal figures who are said to have appeared to provide testimony in support of the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, marking the first time a Chief Justice has been suspended since the Fourth Republic began.

Sources from The Law Platform indicated that former Chief Justices Anin Yeboah and Sophia Akuffo, along with respected Professor Nana SKB Asante, offered testimonies backing the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, during the hearing.

The esteemed Sam Okudzeto, a former Bar Association President with almost fifty years of legal experience; long-serving General Legal Council member Justin Amenuvor; and the Secretary of the Ghana Bar Association were also reported to have testified in favor of Justice Torkornoo.

Furthermore, the report stated that the committee is scheduled to continue its hearings on September 15, 2025, concentrating on the petition from Shining Stars, whose attorney, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, requested a leave of absence due to illness during the previous adjournment.

The report noted that the committee postponed proceedings for a month to give lawyer Barker-Vormawor time to “recover and address the case regarding Shining Stars, whose legitimacy as a legal entity and ability to submit their petition is currently under review by the High Court, General Jurisdiction division, overseen by the Honorable John Eugene Nyante Nyadu J.”

This committee, which was created by President John Dramani Mahama to examine three petitions against the Chief Justice, started its hearings on May 15, 2025.

This five-member panel, led by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court, was formed by President Mahama under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and with the advice of the Council of State, following a preliminary assessment indicating a case against the Chief Justice.

Upon completing its work, the committee is expected to provide its recommendations to President Mahama.
