The disclosure of the alleged involvement of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, in the Ahafo Hwediem incident, where an angry mob reportedly mobilised, vandalised, and assaulted military officers from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), has sparked calls for his arrest and prosecution.
According to Erastus Asare Donkor, an anti-illegal mining advocate and media personality, the lawmaker allegedly stormed the scene, accompanied by purported thugs, demanding the release of illegal miners arrested by the NAIMOS team.
Donkor also accused the lawmaker of inciting the angry youths to pursue the NAIMOS team en route to the Ahafo Hwediem Police Station.
He made this known on his Facebook page on November 2, 2025.
“While arrangements were being made to convey the suspects to the Hwediem Police Station, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, arrived at the scene with several thugs. The MP indicated that he was sent by Hon Collins Dauda, MP for the area and demanded that the Director releases the arrested kingpins including a Burkinabe immediately and remove their handcuffs, arguing that he did not want the locals to see them in handcuffs. The Director politely declined the unlawful request, maintaining that the arrests were appropriate and that the right procedure be followed through to the Police,” he stated.
“Subsequently, the MP and the thugs became violent and forcefully snatched the handcuffs keys from one of the soldiers and took the handcuffs off the kingpins before chasing the NAIMOS team whiles going to the police station. Upon arrival at the Hwediem Police Station to lodge a report and hand over the suspects and exhibits, a crowd of about six hundred (600) people from Hwediem and nearby communities surrounded the station. The mob, incited by Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, demanded the immediate release of the arrested suspects and seized vehicles. They warned that they would “discipline” the soldiers if their demands were ignored,” he wrote.
Following the revelation, several persons, including some members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), have called for the immediate arrest of the lawmaker over his alleged involvement in the incident.
Notable among the critics is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Eric Adjei.
He condemned the lawmaker’s alleged actions, describing them as “unparliamentary,” and criticised him for embarrassing the government by acting contrary to its efforts to combat galamsey.
“Your actions are unparliamentary, and it is a shame for you as a member of Parliament. How can you fight against what the President and the entire nation are seeking? You have truly embarrassed everyone,” he posted on Facebook on November 3, 2025.
Similarly, other critics have called on the government to take what they consider decisive action against him to serve as a deterrent.
