Three dead in abandoned galamsey pit at Twifo-Mampong

Three people have died while four others were rescued after being trapped in an abandoned mining pit at Twifo-Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Mokwa District.

Local reports indicate that the victims, mostly young men, had secretly entered the site, which has been inactive for nearly five years following the closure of a Chinese mining company’s operations.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Isaac Yawson, confirmed the incident to Adom News, adding that the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Twifo Praso morgue for autopsy and further investigation.

While the identities of the victims are yet to be officially confirmed, they are believed to be natives of Mampong.

Mr. Yawson revealed that the tragedy occurred on a Wednesday, a day traditionally observed as a no-go day for the forest, when activities such as farming and mining are prohibited.

Investigations indicate that many youths in the community engage in illegal mining at night.

“The chief has assured me that anyone caught engaging in such activities at night will be arrested,” the DCE emphasised.
