‘We’ll hold government accountable for every cedi approved’ — Minority on 2026 budget

The Minority in Parliament has emphasized its readiness to engage constructively on the 2026 budget but will only support proposals that genuinely advance national interest.

Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, gave the assurance at the opening of a post-budget workshop in Parliament on Friday, November 14, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus, she said the Minority remains committed to a productive, fact-based debate but will continue to demand strict accountability from government.

“We will hold the government to account for every cedi approved,” she stressed, adding that fiscal discipline and transparency are non-negotiable principles for the caucus.

The three-day workshop seeks to bring together Members of Parliament, technocrats, and policy analysts ahead of the upcoming formal debate on the budget.

It is aimed at helping MPs better understand the figures, policy directions, and economic assumptions contained in the statement presented on Thursday by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

Ato Forson’s budget on the first full-year financial plan under his tenure has already sparked public interest, particularly regarding spending priorities and commitments under the IMF programme.

Patricia Appiagyei noted that the Minority will scrutinise each policy proposal based on its impact on ordinary Ghanaians, adding that the caucus will support any measure that promotes economic stability, job creation, and responsible public spending.
