The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has warned that shoddy work and delays will not be tolerated in the construction of a 24-hour multipurpose market in Bimbilla in the Northern Region.
He cautioned that the contractor, Yaape Doo Company Limited, would be replaced if it failed to meet agreed timelines and standards, stressing that the project must be completed within two years.
Mr Ibrahim issued the warning during a sod-cutting ceremony for the market in Bimbilla, held as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Tour of the Northern Region.
“Contractor, you are given two years to complete it. The President would want to commission it. No shoddy job, no mobilisation; In six months, if you’re not on site, we will re-award it to another contractor. All these are conditions in the contract,” he stated.
The Minister explained that the 24-hour market concept would be replicated across all 261 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies nationwide, with facilities designed to support traders, particularly market women.
He said the markets would be equipped with essential amenities, including cold storage facilities, fire posts, schools, police stations, clinics, pharmacies, banks, an information centre, lorry terminals, shops and shopping malls to enhance commercial activity.
Meanwhile, a town hall meeting is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, at the University of Development Studies in Tamale, where government appointees are expected to outline key interventions implemented over the past year.
